Cleveland Clouds struck me with a sense of childlike wonder. The sculpture
takes these large lofty clouds and brings them down to our level, just within
reach. The clouds, suspended adjacent to a staircase, can be seen from
many different views as one moves from the first to the fourth floor. As a
result, I can finally see an artist’s interpretation of the surface of an object I
have always wondered about.. Although in nature clouds are large, they are
not typically close to us like they are here. Muniz has thought about scale in
his work before; the way that small things can be largely impactful.
Cleveland Clouds provides an opportunity to reflect on the wonders I have
had since I was small. The surfaces and shapes of Muniz’s clouds are solid,
the lighting that falls on them from the windows and from fixtures hidden in
the architecture is ever changing. It amazes me to finally be at eye-level with
the giant, fluffy forms that all humans have grown accustomed to, but are
rarely able to look upon so intimately.
